Slight Chance of Snow, Wintry Mix for Alpharetta, Milton

Portions of north and central Georgia may see flurries, sleet or snow this weekend and freezing temps through Sunday night.

Portions of north and central Georgia could see some snow flurries or a wintry mix as temps drop headed into the weekend.

Starting tonight, you'd better get those sensitive or newly-budded plants protected, or they may be damaged or killed. From midnight to 9 a.m. Friday freezing temperatures are forecast in a freeze warning by the National Weather Service. And no matter what your children tell you, shorts are not appropriate dress, and that jacket is a necessity Friday morning while waiting on the bus or carpool.

Overnight freezing temps are expected through Sunday night, and Friday night and Saturday hold slight chances of precipitation, according to the National Weather Service, which issued the freeze warning that includes North Fulton cities including Alpharetta and Milton. It's effective through 9 a.m. Friday.

"A fast-moving but potent upper low sweeping across the Tennessee Valley and southern Appalachians [on] Saturday will bring a chance for at least light wintry precipitation to north Georgia," according to NWS' Hazardous Weather Outlook. "Any accumulations are expected to remain light at this time. Generally a half inch or less mainly across far north Georgia with up to an inch at the highest elevations of the far northern mountains. 

"In addition, very cold overnight low temperatures are expected to continue across the area through Sunday night with a hard freeze possible across north Georgia [on] Saturday night."

In Alpharetta and Milton, expect a 10 percent chance of snow showers after 5 a.m., with a low around 30 degrees, according to the NWS forecast. A chance of rain and snow showers is forecast before 10 a.m., then a chance of rain showers. The chance of precipitation is 40 percent. Saturday night the low will drop to around 26.
