Black Ice May Ruin Thursday Morning Drive in Alpharetta

Wet roads from today's rain couples with freezing temperatures set the stage for a dangerous situation.

Driving may be hazardous tonight and Thursday morning in Alpharetta and Milton, with the possibility of black ice.

The National Weather Service says that roads will be wet this evening from rainfall today. As temperatures drop below freezing, black ice will be possible especially along bridges and overpasses. Drivers should use extra caution especially Thursday morning.

The temperature at 7 p.m. Wednesday might be close to 40 degrees, but the wind chill is making it feel below freezing already, more like 30 degrees. That will just get worse as the night progresses. If you are heading out to work at 6 a.m., give yourself a few more minutes to allow for cleaning the ice off your windshield as the temperature will be 29 degrees–and feel 7 degrees colder.

It's expected to stay below freezing until just before 9 a.m., so you late risers won't get that much relief.

Finally at 3 p.m. we should reach our high of 51 degrees. But then the cycle repeats itself as the thermometer records a drop in temperature down to 30 by 6 a.m. Friday. The bright spot is that little to no wind means it won't feel any colder than that. Since there's almost no chance of rain or snow Thursday or Friday, it might be safer to drive. But there's bound to be some automatic sprinkler system active along your drive, so you still need to keep a watch out for black ice.

Get used to these days of highs not much above 50, and lows around freezing for the next several days, as that's what is in the forecast.
