Alpharetta Rotarians Serve Our Troops

The local service organization joined the USO in providing a barbecue lunch to troops passing through Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Alpharetta Rotarians recently spent several hours at Harstfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport serving lunch to soldiers and recruits headed to basic training.

Since Sept. 22, 2001, the Rotary Club of Alpharetta stepped up its involvement with members of the military, actively sending care packages to soliders serving overseas. The most recent support went to elements of the 75th Ranger regiment currently deployed to Afghanistan.

Along with the care packages, Rotarians have volunteered at the USO within the airport. Recently that menat serving barbecue lunch and all the trimmings to those soldiers passing through the airport, some of them recruits on their way to basic training.

“It is because of our military that we enjoy the freedoms we have today,” said Rotary Club of Alpharetta President Dan Merkel. 'It’s our honor to serve the men and women of our armed forces.”

The recent Alpharetta contingent included Paul Ray, Bill Weeks, William Perkins and military veterans Chris Kemp, Jerry Urmanski and Rich Pentony.
