The Autrey Mill Cornheads won the “Most Innovative Solution” category award at the Super-Regionals for their project “HELP” (Hydrogen and Energy Logistics Platform). HELP utilizes fuel cell technology to provide power and water after a natural disaster“This team has accomplished much in the short time they have been together and we are proud of their achievements” says Ed Clawson, coach for the Cornheads. “They have truly embodied the spirit of coopertition as exemplified in their mentoring of the school’s junior team.”

Taylor Road’s Atomic Bubbles won the 3rd place Champion's Award at the Super Regionals for excellence and innovation in both the robot performance and their project, "Weather Alerting Transmission and Communication Helper" (WATCH).  The team learned that cell phones may not be reliable during and after natural disasters and came up with a portable weather alerting technology to inform others of oncoming natural disasters.  “This has all been a wonderful learning experience for the students and we are proud of their achievements” said Julia Shin, one of the coaches for the Atomic Bubbles. “We are very excited to participate at the State level”.

This year’s theme, “Nature’s Fury,” centers on natural disasters. The students built and programmed robots to perform tasks that simulate rescue missions. These tasks include rescuing people and pets, removing trees from the roadway, and deploying a rescue plane.  Each team gets 2 1/2 minutes to complete as many missions as possible. In addition to the robotics performance, the teams are also judged on their project, robot design and programming, core values and teamwork. To assess how well the teams worked together, they are given various timed activities such as unscrambling letters to build a phrase and making up a song that describes their team.

The Georgia FIRST Lego League competition started last Fall with over 500 teams competing.  Winners from the state competition will advance to the World Festival to be held April 23-26 in St. Louis.
