Hiring Insured Contractors

It is quite common for residents to hire contractors to complete specific task such as remodeling, painting, cleaning and more. Hiring properly insured contractors will minimize the risk associated with remodeling, repair and service work.  This protects your property and persons in the event of an accident.  Have the contractor provide you with a certificate of insurance before starting any work.

A standard General Liability insurance policy protects against liability claims for bodily injury and property damage.  A standard Workers Compensation policy will cover medical and rehabilitation costs and lost wages for employees injured on the job.  In our opinion, it is pertinent to hire contractors who carry the proper type of coverage.  So you may be asking, how do I know if my contractor is covered?  Before starting a job request that your contractor provide you with a COI (Certificate of Insurance).  This certificate will list the insurance company, types of insurance, effective dates and the limits of liability carried.  Once you have obtained a copy of the COI it is best to call the insurance company listed on the COI and verify that the insurance policy is in effect.  We have hundreds of people calling to verify coverage every week.
