Milton Mayor Speaks to Milton Business Alliance

The group of local business owners heard about current and futures projects in the city.

Milton Mayor Joe Lockwood told members of the Milton Business Alliance about city projects on Thursday, May 17. He was guest speaker at the Milton Business Alliance (MBA) meeting held at the Crooked Creek Clubhouse on Thursday night. MBA member Tom Hobby said in an email, "Joe talked about current and future projects in the Milton community. The meeting was attended by members of the MBA, which are local business owners." Hobby said the mayor's topics included the bridge construction on Cogburn Road and the new fire station on Hwy. 9 south of Publix, with a road connecting Hwy 9 and Cogburn. Alpharetta Firm Helps Cumming Teen Launch First Book

A South Forsyth Middle School student won an Alpharetta company's young writers contest and debuts 'Messages from the Breathless' this weekend.

This weekend 13-year-old Savannah McLeod, a South Forsyth Middle School student, will celebrate the launch of her book, Messages from the Breathless. The suspenseful novelette tells the story of a high school love that doesn't end after death. “I’m so excited about being an author,” said McLeod. “Writing is something I really love to do." The seventh grader's opportunity was made possible by BookLogix, an Alpharetta firm that provides a complete range of publishing services to self-publishing authors and independent publishers. In preparing her book for publication, McLeod got an up-close look at what it takes to create and market a book from beginning to end. Alpharetta Rejects Downtown School Moratorium

A proposal to put a hold on any commercial or academic school construction, expansion or conversion was made to give City Council time to consider what uses are best in downtown.

A proposal to put a three-month halt to adding or expanding any schools in downtown Alpharetta first was panned by business owners, and then City Council itself during a meeting at City Hall on Monday, May 15. City Councilman Mike Kennedy proposed a resolution to put a temporary moratorium on applications for permits or business licenses for the construction or modification of academic or commercial schools, or the conversion of any existing building for a school. Council Donald Mitchell said he considered the resolution after hearing downtown business owners tell him foot traffic to their stores was dropping. The intent of the moratorium was to give staff and City Council time to examine whether school uses should be permitted in …

It's Just Hair, So Kids, Adults Cut It Off

The annual Locks of Love Cut-A-Thon brought more than 100 donors to Taylor Brooks Salon.

For some, having hair would be wonderful. But on Monday, it was all about cutting it off to help those girls who suffer from long-term medical hair loss. Locks of Love creates and provides custom hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. Naomi Kolosna, a student at Medlock Bridge Elementary, said she saw the event in her school's newsletter, so she decided to donate. "My friends started doing it and it sounded really interesting," she said. Katie McGivney, 11, could be forgiven for being a little anxious as her ponytails were being cut. Her mother, Maryann, said it was the first time in six years she had her hair cut. Mom was there donating ponytails as well…

A group of business and community leaders in Leadership North Fulton's Class of 2012 present Job Fair North Fulton as they try to help several hundred residents to do what their team name suggests. Unum Leases Space in Alpharetta Data Center

The disability, group life and voluntary benefits firm is the first operational tenant in the facility.

T5 Data Centers today announced that Unum will lease wholesale data center space in T5@Atlanta, T5’s purpose-built wholesale data center located in Alpharetta. The new data center is part of Unum’s implementation of a data center strategy to add redundancy and modernize its facilities and systems to better serve its internal and external customers.
