Question of the Week: What Did You Think of the Controversial Obama Logo?
The logo, which stirred up some controversy recently, was apparently dropped by the Obama campaign over the weekend.
Much is being made by politicos about the Obama campaign's representation of the flag, which puts the campaign logo in place of the field of stars.
Conservative media and websites have come out strong against the logo, which might have caused the campaign to quietly drop its use over the weekend. Obama supporters can no longer purchase merchandise with the controversial logo. An error message is returned for anyone attempting to access the link on the the campaign's website.
What did you think of the logo? Much ado about nothing by Republicans? Or a disrespectful overstep by the Obama campaign?

I personally always respected the nobility of the American flag but in the last 10 years I have seen it in varying alterations on paper napkins, t-shirts, beach towels and dishes. It seems to be an accepted trend to modify the flag in designs - therefore, this is no big deal, it seems to be a side effect of 9/11 that Bush encouraged to promote patriotism. So...it's much ado about nothing by the Republicans.

I couldn't have said it better myself, Kim.
100% correct!

It's just another example of this administration disrespecting our country. It's their way of showing that they believe they should run our nation as a socialist union. Its not an arrangement of our flag. It is a new version that shows his campaign holding the states together.

I agree with Kim, I have at least 3 "flag" beach towels and they make me no less a patriot or American or the companies that made them. The GOP is just blowing hot for no other reason than they can... Big deal...

There are more important topics than disagreements over symbols using our nations colors, dogs on the roofs of cars, and other distractions. Get to intelligent and detailed discussions of the issues, please!

I suppose it's better than him spitting on the flag or setting it on fire. What this image does that napkins and beach blankets do not do is suggest that O hopes to re-make America in his own image. I suppose every president wants to leave his stamp; usually it's just not so clearly self-aggrandizing: "Now when you think of America, think of me!" When we move forward, let's also move up -- forward and down is not really the kind of progress we're after.

Wow, Sean, I didn't get that from the symbol at all. I guess it depends on a preconceived notion - whether someone is looking for the positive or the negative. I took it as "I am a part of the American Democracy and a patriot proud to represent my country."

I don't think it's an "accepted trend" to modify the flag from stars in the upper left to the Obama logo in the upper left! Come on people wake up!!!! Smart move to take Obama flag off the campaign site, but if Obama wins re-election, will we see this version resurface?

Kim, proud patriots salute the flag, they don't change it to be a reflection of themselves. The point of the changed flag is less about patriotism than it is about the commodization of one of our national symbols for the sake of a pampered ego.

I stand and salute the flag, and consider myself a true patriot and would never wear a modified flag but that leaves me confused how to view next 4th of July parade when so many people are wearing modified flag clothing to celebrate the country? Is it I am surrounded by a bunch of pampered egoists or enthusiastic patriots? And the US Postal Service logo? Tim Pawlenty? Conclusion is we are not surrounded by patriots rather a society full of commoditized, (commercialization for profit), pampered big egos. Hmmmm, I don't disagree. At least Obama still believes in freedom of expression.

Really, Sean? Because the Romney campaign has a number of campaign related logos that incorporate the American flag design on them, buttons, etc. Give me a break with your 'remaking the nation into his image' notion. Try civil political discourse instead of trying to demonize someone by proclaiming they want to make themselves a 'dictator'.

Brian, the question put to readers was, "What Did You Think of the Controversial Obama Logo?" The Obama flag, then, is what I restricted my comments to. If somebody cares to pen a new article about Romney modifying our flag, let's see it and I'll offer my two cents on that topic too. I'm reflexively skeptical of most people who want to be in politics: it's a necessary job, I try to deal with that part of life when I must and do a decent job of it, but to me it's about as enjoyable as going to the dentist (and I actually like my dentist). Regarding your last sentence, I'm inclined to use the term "egoist," which ranks several notches below dictator; let's have an article about Romney, and I'll tell you what I think of that subject too.

@Brian, Obama did use a rendition of the American flag in his logo 4 years ago. Just not so blatant and in your face. Could this be his part of communicating to the "dumb down" Americans?
@ Sean, TOUCHE'. Eloquently stated for the intelligent Americans.

I come from an age group where the "Obama flag " and his hand-outs are truly reminiscent of how Nazi Germany duped and hobbled the people of Germany. Only this time, it will be worse... Know your world history... Know your American history... The founding fathers are turning over in their graves.

Republicans and conservatives have created a cottage industry criticizing the patriotism of Democrats and liberals. Remember when they criticized Obama for not saluting during the pledge of allegiance (except that he did) or when he was not wearing a lapel flag pin (except that he was)?
This garbage won't convince anyone to vote for Mitt (which is what you want, right?), so why not find an issue that actually might convince an independent instead of wasting everyone's time?
(By the way, any Republicans want to criticize Tim Pawlenty for his tattered, roadkill American flag logo?

. . . I didn't think so.)
Sean

Cottage industry: kind of like letting people know they're racist if they don't vote for your candidate.
I'd like Pawlenty's treatment of the flag even less if he imposed a big letter "P" on it somewhere.

That's funny, because the only people who bring up the racism issue anymore are Republicans complaining that they can't complain (while they're complaining).

"the only people who bring up the racism issue anymore are Republicans..."
I wish that were true. For a quick corrective to that remark, try any number of remarks from Democrats in Congress, or MSNBC, or HuffPo, or Bill Maher. To go off the beaten path a bit, try the canonical http://republicansareracists.com/
Anyway, to return to the original question of this article: "What did you think of the logo? Much ado about nothing by Republicans? Or a disrespectful overstep by the Obama campaign?"
Answer: A minor example of an egoist's habitual disregard for American heritage and symbols. Absent numerous more grotesque examples, almost nobody would pay attention to this. Given the litany of degradations inflicted by this administration, the doctored flag becomes an obvious and easy target.

Well, I looked for the Bill Maher/HuffPo/MSNBC/Democratic quotes that let "people know they're racist if they don't vote for [Obama]," but I couldn't track them down. I guess I'll have to take your word for it. Maybe that mean old "liberal media" is speaking at a decibel range only Republicans can hear.
But I do wonder at the logic of making this "doctored flag" "an obvious and easy target" when the "egoist's habitual disregard for American heritage and symbols" and "litany of degradations" would by that very description (if true) make them far more worthy of our ire. Must be more Republican sidestepping of the fact that 8 years of lower taxes on the rich have resulted in catastrophic deficits and record unemployment that the country is still trying to recover from.

Wow, it's really generous of you to prove my point for me. Let me just recap: the examples you linked to are 1. Bill Maher stating in no uncertain terms that Republican s are NOT all racists 2. An article discussing the absolutely inarguable truth the Republican party is demographically whiter today than even a few years ago when Jeb Bush was hoping to attract more Latino voters 3. Chris Mathews decrying people who exploit racism for political gain, but never actually mentioning Republicans (if you're hearing him say 'Republicans,' however . . . ) and 4. a link to an unbiased right wing website for an article about Senate Democrat's calling out the obvious race-baiting by a conservative Super PAC (because apparently it's somehow unfair for Democrats to call ANYthing racist without Republicans getting their panties in a twist).
And yet in all of this, nowhere does anyone -Democrat, Liberal or independent, suggest that simply not voting for Obama is somehow racist.

Well, I'm glad we're all agreed that Republicans aren't racist simply for not voting for a certain candidate. It's good to see that ad hominems have no place in this discussion.
