Milton Needs People to Help Foster Community Connections

The city's mini-grant program will be planned and implemented by the people of the community, but a core group needs to make sure things go smoothly.

Milton wants to help the community foster connections between neighbors, but the city needs help.

A launch party for a mini-grant program aimed at funding these projects will be held Thursday, Aug. 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the Anyone looking for a way to get involved in the community is invited.

This program is funded in large part through the Georgia Council on Developmental Disabilities' (GCDD) Real Communities Initiative: Milton. The grants support neighborhood improvements, promote neighborhood associations and fund projects that bring community members together.

All projects in the program will be initiated, planned and implemented by residents, said Amanda Quintana, the program's community builder and grant coordinator. But there has to be a core group of volunteers to ensure the process goes smoothly for everyone involved.

"We need to set up a committee to approve the projects and publicize the need for them in the community," said Quintana. "We've got the money, and we know we've got the desire in the community. Come help us make this dream a reality."

Communications Manager Jason Wright said the projects could be for many different things, such as a quilting group, a bridge group or an Eagle Scout project, to name just a few.

"It's a pretty broad swath of options as far as what the projects can be." Wright said.

Currently, GCDD provides Milton a little less than $20,000 in federal funds and the city matches just less than $5,000. All progress will be reported to City Council on a quarterly basis.

Though the money is coming from an agency known for advocacy, that isn't the aim of this effort. Instead, it seeks to look beyond differences in ability and get to the core of what makes us all invested in our home.

The Bethwell Community Center is located at 2695 Hopewell Road in Milton.
