Milton Is One of America's Safest Cities

The city ranks 39th on a list of Top 100 Safest Cities compiled by real estate data company Neighborhood Scout.

Milton is one of three cities in Georgia named to the Top 100 Safest Cities in the U.S. 

The list compiled by real estate data company Neighborhood Scout ranks Milton 39th in its list. Other cities in Georgia on the list include Johns Creek at number 14 and Peachtree City coming in at number 63.

"This confirms what our residents have felt for a long time - that they live in one of the safest, most desirable and lowest crime areas in the country," Police Chief Deborah Harrell said in a press release from the city.

According to the company, Milton's inclusion in the list is based on the number of property and violent crimes compiled by the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting database per 1,000 residents.

Only cities with populations over 25,000 were included in the list.

In 2012, Milton reported 22 violent crimes and 353 property crimes. The city last year had a population of 33,711.

This means, the city states, that resides have a one in 1,532 chance of becoming the victim of a violent crime, below the state average of one in 268. Also, residents have a one in 95 chance of becoming a victim of a property crime, compared to the state average of one in 28. 

The honor comes on the heels of the city winning a 2012 PACE award from the Clean Air Campaign, being named a Bronze Level Green Community by the Atlanta Regional Commission and having the highest quality of life in the state of Georgia and ninth-highest in the southern United States by the Business Journals' On Numbers survey.
