North Fulton Middle Schools Outperform Most State, National Peers

Fulton Science Academy leads North Fulton middle schools

North Fulton middle schools score higher than the national average on the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS), and most did better than the state scoring averages.

The scores are reported in percentiles and show how students compared with other students across the nation.

ITBS percentile rankings are available for all Fulton County Schools online and as a pdf file posted with this story. The test was taken by third, fifth and eighth grade students.

Fulton Science Academy Middle School ranked the highest for eighth graders. River Trail Middle School had the second highest showing in North Fulton. Amana Academy, another charter school in Alpharetta, had the biggest one year gains, jumping by at least 7 percent and as much as 24 percent in the scores for Reading, Math, Language Social Studies and Science.

(Check Alpharetta-Milton Patch soon for a preview of the continuating of a zoning hearing for Amana Academy on Monday, Dec. 19, which wants to relocate to Windward.)

Please note the fact that Fulton Science Academy is #1 in every subject. This is important to point out considering the fact that the FCBOE is currently recommending denial of the FSA MS Charter Renewal and intends to shut the school down in June.

Closing down a top performing school like FSA will really be a shame. FSA must be doing something right. Instead of closing down Fulton Co should study and emulate FSA's teaching model to lift the performance of other low ranking school. County should think very carefully through the whole process and come to a middle ground so that outcome becomes acceptable to everybody.

Let's hope the FCBoE decides to abide by it's own slogan and put children first when voting on the charter renewal- you can't argue with 4 straight years of the top scores!

The fact that the County Superintendent is so adamant on his position and willingly will jeapardize an award winning school is a shame. This in his first year on the job. Fulton county citizens need to be aware that he could be trouble for all kids and will NOT put kids first. Instead of sharing the success with other schools, kids and future of this great nation he is advocating the negative and sending a dangerous message to the community as a whole. Residents please unite and speak up.

The result above only shows that FSA is an achiever and this achievement speaks for itself (#1 in all subjects for 4 straight years). The school's overall program is working and why not make it as a model for other charter and public schools instead of FCBOE's consideration of closing the school down . Why punish the best performing Middle school in Fulton County. They deserve another 10 years charter renewal.

What message does it send to these children who have worked very hard if earning the highest scores in Fulton county is not worth the superintendent's support. The FCBOE and superintendent should be using these children and teachers as role models for the rest of the county and state.

Ugh! Looks like my daughter will have to go to another school next year to finish middle school. I am not too concerned as this other school is a good school I just felt she was in a better learning environment of geeks like her. However tonight was real eye opener on how the Dr. Avossa and the rest of the board without blinking flat out lied and distorted the story and truth to the parents and ne...

I think it time to move and close my business here in Fulton Co and move to another country or state. Unless this school board is changed and learns to work with schools and not bully them out and deneying a charter renewal. Its obvious Fulton does not need jobs or tax payors or they would have stood up to this Bully School Board.
